7 Office Security Measures to Keep Your Workplace Safe

1. Use Access Control

If you aren’t a public store, you shouldn’t open your doors to anyone and everyone. The only people that should have access to your office are your team members.

Start by implemented access control to your office by giving your employees keys to access any area inside your building. All they will need to do is swipe an access card, and they will be able to get into your building.

If you want to go a step further, you can provide different levels of access, depending on your employee’s role. Doing this ensures that nobody can get into areas that they shouldn’t have.

If you plan on having visitors, then you can still have a lobby. All you have to do is secure the area behind the lobby instead of your front door.

2. Get Your Lighting Right

One of the best ways to prevent burglaries is to be proactive against it. People who commit burglaries don’t want to be seen. If you make them visible, then it can cause them to think twice about attacking your employees when they’re traveling to their cars.

If you don’t want to light the outside of your building at all times, you can use motion lights. The only time these lights turn on at night is when one of its sensors detects motion.

If you want to take things a step further, make sure any security cameras you have outside are lit up. Your potential burglars should know that there is enough light to catch them on camera.

3. Lock Your Server Room

If you have physical servers at your office, you need to make sure they have their own space. Most businesses have a separate room that is locked and cooled separately from the rest of the building. The only people who have access to this room are your IT staff.

Locking your server room means nobody will be able to get physical access to your most sensitive data. A lot of the time, usernames and passwords don’t mean much if you have physical access to a computer. You can use a USB drive to change passwords and boot to another operating system.

4. Protect Paper Copies

Not all businesses can afford to go digital yet. This means you may have sensitive data lying around the office.

If you’re in this situation, make sure to invest in file cabinets and lock them. Doing this will help stop people from being able to access sensitive data. If someone does try to get in, they’ll have to be capable of breaking locks quickly.

You also need to protect the information on paper you throw away. If you’re done with the paperwork, invest in a good shredder. Running sensitive information through a shredder will stop people who dig through your garbage from finding things they shouldn’t.

5. Set Up Surveillance

Even if you do have an authentication system that works for accessing your building, that doesn’t mean it’s impossible to sneak in. No system is foolproof.

You can combat this by installing a surveillance system in the office. If someone sneaks in during the day, the person who monitors your video will be able to find them and take action.

Surveillance will also help if someone sneaks in overnight. Many cameras have motion detection. If something triggers the security system, an alert will be sent out for you to act on.

6. Train Your Employees

Your security procedures don’t mean anything if your employees don’t know what they are or how to use them. You need to invest in training to make sure everyone knows what to do.

Your training will depend on the type of business you’re in. For instance, a retail store will want to train their team on what to do during a robbery. Do you want them to prioritize calling the police or give everything to the robber?

An office building will need procedures on what to do if someone gets into the building that shouldn’t be there. Who do you call and what should you do while they are there?
