REMOTE PARTICIPATION ONLY. Technology continues to impact the delivery and availability of legal services, both in how lawyers practice law and how the public consumes legal services. The legal profession has long faced issues with equal access to justice and the uniform administration of justice. Evolving technology offers the possibility of a level playing field and the democratization of the law, but it also could perpetuate or exacerbate existing biases and prejudices in the justice system. Technology has allowed many new players to enter the market for the delivery of legal services. This increased competition is affecting the practice of law, but technology also affects lawyers’ ethical responsibilities, from competence to communication and confidentiality. “To maintain the requisite knowledge and skill, a lawyer should keep abreast of changes in the law and its practice, including the benefits and risks associated with relevant technology.” But beyond that duty of competence, and to remain competitive, lawyers must understand the changing marketplace, from technological innovations to changing consumer expectations. 1.0 Ethics CLE credit will be applied.
