3 Common Car Accident Injuries to Be on the Look Out For

There were over 33,000 fatal car accidents in the US in 2018 alone. The good news is that the vast majority of car accidents are not fatal.

You’re far more likely to be injured in a car accident than to die in one. Better yet, your chances of walking away unscathed are higher than your chances of being injured.

Unfortunately, statistics are based on real events. Some people die in car accidents and many more are injured.

A car accident can cause any number of injuries, but some are more common than others. We’ll talk about some of the most common car accident injuries in the paragraphs below.

1. Soft Tissue Injuries

Soft tissue is a term that describes muscles and connective tissues. Having a soft tissue injury often means you’ve strained, sprained, or pulled something. It can also refer to whiplash.

Whiplash occurs because the muscles in the neck have been forced back or forward rapidly. If you’ve had a car accident recently and are now experiencing pain and limited movement in the neck.

You may also feel these symptoms in your shoulders, back and arms. Dizziness, exhaustion, and tingling can also occur.

Thankfully, whiplash is a temporary condition that often heals with rest and physical therapy.

2. Head Injuries

Head injuries are often included amongst common car accident injuries. People sometimes hit their head on something when they’re being pushed back and forth. While you don’t have to hit your head to suffer a brain or spinal injury, it is the most common cause.

Head injuries can range in severity, and you can’t always tell which one is occurring without a CT scan or an MRI. For this reason, you should always see a doctor if you suspect you have a head injury.

It’s also recommended that you seek injury compensation. Head injuries can require major medical attention, which is guaranteed to be costly. The person responsible for the accident should pay for it.

Keep in mind that just because you were injured doesn’t mean the accident wasn’t your fault.

3. Broken Bones

Broken bones are another common injury, though they’re often not as dangerous as head injuries. Broken bones aren’t fatal. Any fatalities involving broken bones usually occur because organs were damaged, such as the brain.

Infections can also be an issue, but this usually only happens if you don’t get them treated. Another upside is that it’s easy to tell if you have a broken bone. You will have intense pain and a loss of movement depending on where the bone is.

Some of the most obvious fractures are also some of the worst. Compound fractures occur when the bone pierces through the skin. As with all broken bones, compound fractures should be treated by a doctor.
