5 Tips that Help You Combine Work and Study

Being a student is certainly not an easy task, especially if your financial situation isn’t allowing you to focus exclusively on your studies.

Working part time jobs (or even full-time ones) while pursuing academic excellence is one of the hardest challenges that many students are forced to face. Even though it may be sometimes painful and overwhelming, students who are able to effectively balance their work-study schedule will gain significant traits and skills along the way.

A job removes you from your comfort zone and forces you to grow as an individual. While you’re spending some of your most important resources (time, attention, and energy) on making money during college, you must never neglect your academic performance.

Time management skills are key. Moreover, you need to commit to excellence and forget about all your problems. Instead of blaming your job for your bad grades, seek the proper solutions to overcome your struggles and take action.

In today’s post, I’m going to offer you five pieces of advice on how to combine work and study in an effective manner. Let’s start with some time management tips.

Create and Leverage a Schedule

Brian Tracy said that one minute of planning can save ten minutes of action. When your time is divided, you need to start living your day on a schedule.

By creating a schedule, you can keep track of your objectives and priorities and plan everything in advance. In this schedule, I’d suggest you note your study time, class time, exam dates, appointments, and promises that you’ve made. Stay organized all the time but be open to the unexpected!

Stop Procrastinating Until the Last Minute

Back when I was a student, I was working a full time job and I was carelessly delaying all of my academic assignments until the last moment. Most of the time, I was forced to take the hard-worked money out of my pocket and pay for paper at Edubirdie. Simply put, I was working in order to afford to pay professional writers to help me get out trouble.

Procrastination is the root of stress and stress, well, you know, stress is the root of all evil. When you procrastinate, you’re basically allowing your subconscious mind to dictate your actions. Since our brains are constantly aiming to gain pleasure and avoid pain, you’ll often feel tempted to neglect your responsibilities for as long as you can.

When deadlines are close, the pain of losing your job or failing an exam becomes more important than the pain of getting the task done, so you’ll start doing it. Start to become aware of this fact and prevent yourself from choosing the “easy” path.

Whenever you get some free time, make sure you use it wisely. Do something you absolutely enjoy. Meditate. Go out with some friends. Read. Play with your pets. Disconnect! Simply disconnect from your tiring routine and do something that fills your heart with joy and peace.

Don’t Neglect Sleep, Nutrition, and Physical Exercise

In order to have the necessary physical and mental energy to combine work and study, you need to respect your body.

Don’t sacrifice your sleep, no matter what. Even if you’re working from home, make sure that you have a clearly established sleep schedule.

Eat healthy foods and drink plenty of water. Both your brain and body are affected by the quality of foods and drinks that you consume every day.

Exercise every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Keep your body in shape and you’ll experience a lot of benefits like improved stamina, focus, and creativity.

Keep Your Employer Updated

Keep your employer informed at all times. Let him know of your exam dates and busy weeks and explain the situation. Create some boundaries and let it be known that your academic performance is a delicate topic that you care about.  If random obligations pop up, immediately let him know so he can find replacement solutions in time.


Balancing work and study is a great training for “real life”. When you’ll have a family and when you’ll pursue personal objectives, you will probably have to combine your professional life with your personal life the same way you combine your work and study time.
