BALTIMORE, MD—An event was hosted in honor of Gwendolyn Johnson, 98, to recognize all she has done for her community. Johnson has been on the board of Maryland Legal Aid for 51 years, where she held the position as Vice Chair for well over a decade. Although she is stepping down as Vice Chair, she plans to continue working with the organization as a board member. Friends, family and colleagues of Johnsons’s were in attendance to show their appreciation for all that she has done.
Johnson’s activism can be traced back to her representing Cherry Hill Baltimore on the state central committee for 20 years. She also worked closely with the mayor’s office during her career. After being asked to start “Eat Together Baltimore” by William Donald Schaefer, she ran it for many years at the Cherry Hill Senior Center. She volunteered at the Walter P Carter Recreation Center in the 1960s and has been on the board of Legal Aid for 51 years, holding the position as Vice Chair for more than a decade.
Maryland Legal Aid is a private nonprofit organization that provides free high-quality civil legal services to low-income people all across Maryland. They handle cases involving a wide range of issues from child custody to criminal record expungements. Their services include representation before federal and state courts, brief advice and counsel, and referrals to other sources of assistance.
