Andres Mejer was born in Santiago, Chile, as was his mother. His father is from Rosario, Argentina. Andres grew up in a Spanish-speaking home.

His family first entered the United State as tourists and overstayed their visas in 1981. They were undocumented until President Reagan passed a law allowing them to become legal residents. For nearly a decade, they had no legal status. Meaning his parents could not legally work or get a driver’s license.

When the law changed, his parents went to someone they thought they could trust to help them achieve legal status. They were wrong. They paid thousands of dollars and got nothing. They were the victims of fraud, like so many others.

They finally did get their green cards in 1989. Then in 1996, they left the United States and never filed for their Citizenship. They thought they could do it from their home country. After so many years living in the U.S., they wouldn’t deny them. They were wrong. Andres nearly lost his green card. In 1998 he returned to the U.S., and in 1999 he became a Citizen. His father and sister were not so fortunate and lost their green cards.

He became a speaker, author, and attorney to help others avoid our mistakes.

He graduated from Rutgers University in New Brunswick. He went on to Brooklyn Law School, where he met his wife. They have two beautiful kids and live in Long Branch, New Jersey. He is a Commissioner of the Long Branch Housing Authority and a member of the Board on the Monmouth Family Health Center.
