Meet Aminder Kaur Mangat

Aminder Kaur Mangat is a Toronto immigration lawyer with over a decade of practice devoted exclusively to Canadian immigration and refugee law. As founder and head legal counsel at AKM Law, she is one of a small number of lawyers in Ontario to hold the designation of Certified Specialist in Immigration and Citizenship Law from the Law Society of Ontario, a credential awarded only to lawyers who demonstrate sustained, high-level experience in the field.

Aminder holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the University of Manitoba and an LL.B. from the University of West London, and practises as a Canadian Barrister & Solicitor. She built AKM Law into a firm that handles some of the most difficult files in the country: previously refused applications, inadmissibility on criminality, misrepresentation and medical grounds, detention matters, deportation and removal, and appeals at every level of tribunal and the Federal Court.

Her record at the Federal Court has changed how certain cases are decided. In Johnson v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration), 2017 FC 550, Aminder secured a landmark ruling on the notice requirements for spousal sponsorship interviews, a decision that advanced procedural fairness for sponsored families across Canada. She was also among the first advocates to successfully argue for GPS monitoring as an alternative to immigration detention, a position that had been vigorously opposed until then. Shortly after her appearance, Immigration Canada announced it would accept GPS monitoring as a condition of release. Her reported decisions also include Volovetskyi (2025 FC 1160), Abdi (2025 FC 794), Akinwumi (2023 FC 442), Novoa Gonzalez (2022 FC 986), Onyekweli-Ugeh (2021 FC 1138), and Obison (2020 FC 1083).

Recognition has followed the work. Aminder was named one of Toronto's Top Lawyers by Post City Magazines in both 2024 and 2025. In 2025, Women of Influence+ recognized her as one of Canada's top three women entrepreneurs in the Micro-Business category of the RBC Canadian Women Entrepreneur Awards, placing her among fewer than 800 women honoured in the award's 33-year history.

She is also active in shaping the profession. Aminder was elected to the Ontario Bar Association's Immigration Law Section Executive Committee, where she serves as a Member-at-Large and newsletter editor, and she leads a team of associate lawyers, case workers, and clerks serving clients in English and Spanish across Canada and abroad.

Access to justice is a stated part of her mandate rather than an afterthought. Aminder regularly runs free legal clinic days with her team for vulnerable and underserved communities, including at Na-Me-Res, a Toronto shelter and community centre. Her stated goal is to make immigration law transparent and accessible — so that anyone can get honest advice from a lawyer, including a Certified Specialist, without cost or fear standing in the way.

For individuals, families, and businesses navigating a refusal, an inadmissibility finding, a detention, or a complex application, Aminder Kaur Mangat and the AKM Law team offer strategic representation and a free initial assessment.
