Derek Wilson

Derek Wilson is the owner and sole lawyer of Derek Wilson Personal Injury Law, a Hamilton, Ontario firm devoted to representing injured people and policyholders whose disability or insurance claims have been denied. His guiding belief is a simple one: bad things happen to good people, and his job is to help heal the hurt. He has practiced personal injury and insurance litigation for more than 25 years. 

He began his career in 1993, articling with Stanley M. Tick & Associates in Hamilton, a firm where he came to know clients and their families personally. He gravitated toward personal injury work because he was good at it and because it made a real difference in people's lives. In 1997 he earned his Master of Laws degree, with Merit, from the London School of Economics, and then became a partner at a boutique Toronto firm that handled insurance defense exclusively. Working that side of the table gave him an inside understanding of how large insurance companies think and what it actually takes to win a personal injury case or overturn a denied claim. 

By 2009, Derek was eager to return to his roots representing the everyday people of Hamilton and the surrounding region who had been hurt in accidents or denied insurance benefits. He practiced at Malhotra, Stayshyn & Wilson until 2013, when he left to open his own firm. That insider-turned-advocate background remains central to how he markets and runs his practice: he knows both sides of insurance litigation and now works exclusively for plaintiffs. 

What sets Derek apart, by his own description, is the personal nature of his service. Clients work directly with him and only him, never handed off to junior associates, and he deliberately keeps a limited caseload so every client receives his full attention. He takes cases on contingency, collecting no fees until he recovers money for the client, and emphasizes prompt communication and honest guidance throughout. His practice spans motor vehicle accidents, traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries, chronic pain, slip-and-falls, pedestrian and recreational vehicle accidents, wrongful death, and denied short and long-term disability claims. Recognized by Best Lawyers in 2025 and 2026 and affiliated with the Hamilton Law Association and the Law Society of Ontario, he sums up his approach in the firm's recurring promise: "I get results.
