Dylan W. Greenwood has built his criminal defense practice around a simple idea: before deciding how to defend a case, a lawyer must first understand what is truly driving it.

As owner and managing partner of Greenwood Law in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Greenwood represents clients in state and federal criminal matters. His work ranges from drug and firearms charges to white-collar offenses, DWI and other serious allegations. Although the legal issues vary, his method remains consistent. He looks beyond the name of the charge to identify the constitutional question, evidentiary weakness or personal circumstance that could change the course of the case.

Greenwood has compared that process to diagnosing and treating a root cause. Sometimes the decisive issue is an unlawful search. Sometimes it is a discrepancy between witness accounts or a video that contradicts a written report. In other cases, treatment, rehabilitation or a carefully developed mitigation strategy may prove more consequential than a trial.

For Greenwood, effective criminal defense begins with discovering which of those paths the evidence supports.

Drawn to Defense Work

Greenwood’s interest in criminal defense developed while he was attending Wake Forest University School of Law. During two summers with the Federal Public Defender for the Middle District of North Carolina, he saw the work firsthand. The experience, he later said, “lit a fire” under him and led him to focus on developing the skills required to handle criminal cases both inside and outside the courtroom.

His legal education gave him an early foundation in advocacy. Greenwood competed on Wake Forest’s national moot court teams, received the Debbie Parker Moot Court Service Award and was inducted into the Order of the Barristers for excellence in courtroom advocacy.

After graduating in 2013, he founded Greenwood Law during his first year in practice. Building a firm so early in his career placed immediate responsibility on him for both legal strategy and client relationships. As the practice grew, he continued developing a federal defense practice formed in part by his time with the Federal Public Defender while handling criminal matters throughout North Carolina.

Finding What Changes the Analysis

Much of Greenwood’s work takes place long before a trial begins.

When a new case arrives, he starts by examining the charging document and the statute behind it. From there, he works to obtain discovery, review warrants and reports, compare witness accounts and study available recordings. A small inconsistency can raise a larger question. New evidence may strengthen a defense, expose a constitutional issue or require an entirely different strategy.

That willingness to adjust is central to his approach. Greenwood does not assume that every case should be tried, negotiated, or resolved through the same procedural tool. Trial preparation itself often reveals weaknesses that create negotiating leverage. A search-and-seizure problem may support a motion to suppress. When the evidence is difficult to overcome, a fuller account of the client’s background may become essential.

His work in drug-trafficking cases demonstrates how legal analysis and personal circumstances can intersect. Because North Carolina trafficking charges can depend on the weight of a controlled substance, the accusation does not always reflect the kind of organized commercial activity the term suggests.

When treatment is appropriate, he encourages clients to pursue it. He has described seeing meaningful changes in clients who addressed serious drug problems and then presenting that progress to prosecutors or judges. Rehabilitation is not treated as a substitute for legal analysis. It is one possible part of a defense tailored to the facts and the individual.

Making the Law More Understandable

Greenwood has extended that analytical approach beyond his own cases. He hosted For the Record with Greenwood Law as a weekly radio program on WTOB and later developed a podcast addressing bond decisions, plea negotiations, federal arrests, searches, expungements and other aspects of the criminal justice system.

The subjects reflect his broader professional instinct: explaining what happens behind legal terminology so people can make better-informed decisions.

Greenwood has also taught continuing-education courses for North Carolina contractors on business organizations and construction contracts. Within the legal community, he has served as co-president of the Forsyth County Criminal Defense Trial Lawyers Association, participated in the Chief Justice Joseph Branch of the American Inn of Court and mentored Wake Forest moot court students. His service in Winston-Salem has included membership on the Piedmont Opera board.

His work has earned recognition including selection to the North Carolina Rising Stars list each year from 2020 through 2026. Yet the clearest measure of Greenwood’s professional identity is not a list of honors. It is the disciplined curiosity he brings to a case: the determination to understand the record, the law and the person involved before deciding what the defense should become.
