Attorney at Law Magazine Miami Publisher Rhenne Leon sat down with 2019 Rising Star Tyler Tanner of Hamilton, Miller & Birthisel, LLP to discuss his career, his inspiration, and his plans for the future.

AALM: When did you first know you wanted to become an attorney? What drew you to this career?

Tanner: I knew this before I began college. I have always had a lot of respect for the legal profession, and I knew that lawyers could thrive as creative problem solvers; anticipating obstacles and staying one step ahead. My interests and skill set seemed to line up, so I went for it. While the practice may not be as glamorous as I anticipated, for me it was unquestionably the right decision.

AALM: How is the practice of law different than your expectations in law school?

Tanner: Not much. Here is why. I worked as much as I could throughout law school. I clerked at a maritime litigation defense firm for two years, and I also interned for a federal judge. With a young family to support in Miami, I had to make money. Plus, I enjoyed working more than law school. As a result, I learned a lot about the practice and my expectations were tailored early. If anybody were to ask me, I would recommend the same; get as much legal experience as you can before and throughout law school. That will ease the transition.

AALM: What drew you to your current firm? How would you describe the culture there?

Tanner: Hamilton Miller & Birthisel is filled with good people and truly excellent attorneys at every level. The maritime litigation community in Miami is a small one, and I knew this coming in. I love Miami and its melting pot of cultures. That is one reason I decided to make it my home. This firm reflects that vibrant diversity and fosters a welcoming environment to build a practice. More importantly, however, is our focus on hard work, understanding our client’s needs, and doing everything necessary to consistently exceed their expectations.

AALM: Of the cases you’ve worked on or witnessed, what has stood out most in your mind?

Tanner: While I practice primarily in litigation, I have come to really value qualities of kindness, integrity, and respect in working with opposing counsel. I have learned that the confident and proper use of these qualities in litigation is a great asset and can be incredibly effective at resolving cases.

AALM: What do you most hope to accomplish in the future?

Tanner: If I am fortunate enough to earn enough money to retire, I hope that I will not want to at that point. In other words, I hope to reach a level of comfort, trust, and camaraderie amongst my clients, colleagues, and the practice that makes outright retirement seem like a less desirable way to spend the rest of my life.

AALM: Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Tanner: I am blessed with an incredible support system. My wife, Amber, is truly an extraordinary woman, and I could not be more proud of my children, Tyson and Charlotte. We are all in this together, and it’s only the beginning.
