2025 Jacksonville Bar Association YLS Chili Cook-Off

January 9, 2025

On February 22 over a thousand people attended the Jacksonville Bar Association YLS Chili Cook-Off at Riverside Arts Market.

Since 2009, the YLS has hosted a Charity Chili Cook-Off to bring the legal community together for an afternoon of live music and delicious competition. This annual event has become a staple in the community and inspired some firms to hold their own internal cook-offs leading up to the big day. In fact, the cook-off became so popular that it outgrew its location. This prompted a new partnership in 2015 with the renowned Riverside Arts Market. The move inspired tremendous turnout and community participation. Each year, YLS raises thousands of dollars for a local charity.

The Jacksonville Women’s Lawyers Association hosted the 2025 All Bar Celebration on February 19 at the Daniel Webster Perkins Jury Assembly Room.

Baker-Barnes to Serve as Florida Bar President in 2025

Rosalyn “Sia” Baker-Barnes is the president-elect of The Florida Bar, the first African American female to serve in this role in The Florida Bar’s history, dating back to 1889. Baker-Barnes will begin her term as president in 2025. She is a shareholder at Searcy Denney Scarola Barnhart & Shipley, P.A., and the chairperson of the firm’s diversity, equity & inclusion committee. Baker-Barnes is board-certified in civil trial law by the Florida Bar.

ALA Jacksonville Hosts Annual Business Partner & Managing Attorney Expo

November 7, 2024

The Jacksonville Chapter of the Association of Legal Administrators hosted its Annual Business Partner and Managing Attorney Expo at The River Club on November 7, 2024. Over 60 attendees, including JaxALA members, managing attorneys, and business partners enjoyed a jam-packed evening of Networking, casino games and prizes.

On September 18, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid hosted the 22nd Annual Robert J. Beckham Equal Justice Awards Celebration at the Marriott Jacksonville Downtown. Attorney at Law Magazine was a proud sponsor.

2024 Annual Florida Bar Convention

June 19-22, 2024

The 2024 Annual Florida Bar Convention in June provided many opportunities to meet, learn from and network with Florida’s finest legal minds. Attorney at Law Magazine First Coast flew its official travel partner, Tryp Air Charter, to attend and to help celebrate the honor bestowed on Aylmar Thompson as Registered Paralegal of the Year.

Thompson, a paralegal who works in Jacksonville Area Legal Aid’s (JALA) Veterans Services Unit, was recognized for his exemplary performance and outstanding leadership. A Navy veteran himself, Thompson reflected on how hope and chance brought him to JALA to serve and give back to other veterans. His two rescue dogs, named Hope and Chance, remind him daily of how those two words can change someone’s life. He challenged the audience to in turn ignite hope and create a chance to help others for an opportunity to continue a positive domino effect and make a difference.

The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association hosted its 2024 Judicial Reception June 5 at the Everbank Stadium. Nearly 600 judges, attorneys and legal professionals attended. The theme this year – Breaking Barriers – Building a Better Legal Community – focusing on supporting gender equality in the legal profession, the judiciary and the community at large through attendance.

JWLA Breaking Barriers in the Political Arena

D.W. Perkins Plaque Unveiling Ceremony

January 30, 2024

On January 30, the legal community gathered to celebrate the life and memory of Daniel Webster Perkins, Esq. (1879-1972) with the unveiling of a plaque in his honor at the Duval County Courthouse. Perkins is one of the founders and the namesake of the DW Perkins Bar Association. The plaque was sponsored by Pajcic & Pajcic.

Jacksonville Bar Association YLS Kickoff

The Jacksonville Bar Association Young Lawyers Section hosted its Kickoff event at the Gunster office. Over 60 young lawyers attended to network and engage with fellow professionals to kickstart their career.

This year, the event supported Community in Schools of Jacksonville, which serves 40 Duval public schools and over 3,000 local students. Attendees made in-person donations or purchased school supplies via Amazon.

JWLA Hosts Annual Judicial Reception

JWLA Hosts “Grow in Your Career” May Lunch

May 19, 2023

The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association hosted its May luncheon at the River Club. This month, the presentation, “Grow in your Career: What Got You Here Won’t Get You There: How to Prepare NOW for Your Next Role” was presented by Elise Holtzman.

The program examined the skills, behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs you must shift to progress, how to resist the natural pressure to maintain the status quo, and how to overcome inertia and create your path forward.

This month’s luncheon spotlighted the JWLA Kathy Para Student Internship at Jacksonville Area Legal Aid. The internship offers critical legal experience for a law student, while also providing needed legal services in the local community. This internship will fund at least one paid part-time position for a law student intern each summer to do the important work of JALA. Every $10 donated funds one hour of student time.

The JWLA April Luncheon at the River Club

The Jacksonville Women Lawyers Association’s April Luncheon included a presentation on self-esteem by working to battle imposter syndrome. The panelists were Sally Ann Brown, legal counsel at Mayo Clinic and division chair for the Florida Division of the Mayo Clinic Legal Department; Kristen Van der Linde, a shareholder and practice group leader at Boyd & Jenerette, P.A.; Charmaine Chiu, a shareholder and board member at Smith Hulsey & Busey; and Lori Boyer, chief executive officer of the Downtown Investment Authority. The panel was moderated by Kelli Lueckert, an assistant county attorney in Clay County and JWLA’s immediate past president.

This year, JWLA is continuing its efforts of community outreach and giving back to the local community. For each luncheon, they will spotlight a local charity or nonprofit through a donation drive to be collected at that month’s luncheon. This luncheon spotlighted The Women’s Center of Jacksonville.

Freed To Run 2022

November 19, 2022

Freed to Run held the finish line and celebration November 19 from 4-5 pm on the lawn of the Duval County Courthouse. Jacksonville native and Olympic athlete Garrett Scantling was the lead runner in conjunction with the final marathon.   

Freed to Run founder Mike Freed is a shareholder with Gunster, Jacksonville. Board certified in business litigation, his practice spans a wide range of substantive legal disciplines and specialized industries including corporate governance, education, health care, hospitality, labor and employment, construction, logistics, transportation, and receiverships. Freed is also a touring stand-up comedian in his free time. 

Over the years, Freed to Run has raised $2.5 million benefiting the North Florida Medical Legal Partnership (NFMLP). NFMLP is part of a nationwide network of projects in which professionals from the medical and legal communities combine resources to produce outcomes for low-income and vulnerable patients (children and adults) that positively impact their health and ability to thrive. Through the partnership, Jacksonville Area Legal Aid serves about 300 children a year, including patients of Wolfson Children’s Hospital, Nemours Children’s Specialty Care, Jacksonville, UF Health Specialty Pediatric Clinics, and Community PedsCare, a pediatric program of Community Hospice & Palliative Care.
