DCBA Raises Funds for Law School Scholarships

April 10, 2025

The Durham Bar Foundation’s Inaugural Benefit raised over $21,000 for the Adam Lischer Memorial Scholarship Award fund and other legal-industry philanthropic endeavors on April 10. More than 135 people attended the dinner and silent auction at Mystic Farm & Distillery in Durham.

18th Annual 4ALL-Lawyers on Call

March 7, 2025

The North Carolina Bar Foundation held its 18th annual 4ALL-Lawyers on Call on March 7. Roughly 450 attorneys, paralegals, and law students answered 7,063 calls in six locations across the state, including the studios at WRAL-TV. In the 18 years of the 4ALL-Lawyers on Call, 144,006 calls have been answered.

Legal Feeding Frenzy Kick-Off

February 28, 2025

The NCBA Young Lawyers Division hosted its annual Legal Feeding Frenzy Kick-Off event at the Raleigh Food Bank on February 28. This kick-off was the beginning of a month-long friendly competition where law firms, law schools, corporate in-house counsel, and government/public interest organizations compete for the most donations benefitting local Feeding the Carolinas food banks.

Capital City Lawyers Association Hosts a Night at the Oscars

December, 2024

Over 450 guests packed the ballroom at the Hilton Raleigh North Hills in December for the Capital City Lawyers Association Scholarship & Holiday Black Lawyer’s Ball. The theme was “Night at the Oscars.”
The beneficiary was the CCLA Scholarship Fund. “CCLA will award two scholarships to deserving law students who demonstrate a commitment to practicing in the Triangle area and using their legal training and skills to benefit low-income and/or traditionally under-served communities,” said CCLA President Taylor Scruggs-Smith

The impact a new regulatory environment may have on business and the evolution of AI were the hot topics at the annual Ward and Smith In-House Counsel conference in November at the Umstead Hotel.
“Walking the line between leveraging generative AI and mitigating risk is a constant challenge for in-house counsel, and businesses at large,” noted W&S’s Angela Doughty, a NC State Bar board certified specialist in trademark law and IAPP certified AI governance professional. “Now, it [AI] can imitate the way people think and generate large varieties of output. This is the evolution everyone’s talking about, Generative AI.”
W&S securities attorney B.T. Atkinson presented on the finer points of offering company stock. “Death and taxes may be the only guarantee in life,” quipped Atkinson. “But in the business world, the need to raise capital is also a sure thing, regardless of economic conditions.”

Bike Ride for Campbell Law

Campbell Law School held its Sixth annual Bike Ride for Campbell Law on October 19. Sixty riders rode 15-mile or 45-mile courses. The event raised $1,350 to support Campbell Law’s student-led pro bono projects.

NC Lawyers Provide Support to Devastated Western NC

September, 2024

The photos and reports from western North Carolina can’t begin to tell the story of the ongoing horror created by Hurricane Helene on September 26-27, 2024, which killed 224 people and caused $53 billion in damages … so far.

Law firms and legal organizations across the state, like Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC), have provided donations, supplies and time. NCAJ donated $18,150 to the Red Cross in forfeited registration fees from its Mountain Magic conference.

In late October, AALM publisher Robert “Bob” Friedman deployed with Operation BBQ Relief to serve over 300,000 hot meals to people who were left homeless, had no electricity, no water, or were trapped in places with no roads.

Below, you’ll see the devastation and where your dollars are being spent, such as supporting Operation BBQ Relief (operationbbqrelief.org) and LANC (legalaidnc.org).

HPU’s New Law School Welcomes Inaugural Class

August 15

High Point University welcomed the inaugural class of the new Kenneth F. Kahn School of Law on August 15 with a professionalism ceremony inside Congdon Hall on HPU’s campus. The law school’s first class has over 70 students.

Banks Foundation Annual Triangle Golf Challenge

The Banks Foundation held its annual Triangle Golf Challenge in June to raise money for families moving from welfare to work and from public housing to private home ownership. Ninety-six golfers participated in the tournament, which was played on the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh.

The Running of the Bulls

April 2024

It was a glorious day for baseball in April as the Durham County Bar Association gathered for its annual spring social at Tobacco Rd. overlooking Durham Bulls Athletic Park. The Durham Bulls (Triple-A Affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays) beat the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Triple-A Affiliate of the NY Yankees) 3-2 with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth.

4LL Day – A Great Day to be a Lawyer

March 1, 2024

NCBA and NCBF held the 17th Annual 4ALL – Lawyers on Call pro bono event on Friday, March 1. More than 345 attorneys and 97 paralegal and law student volunteers came together to provide free legal information and resources to 6,999 callers statewide.

NC Mock Trial Competition - Regionals

February 3, 2024

Who killed Fran Lewis? The VP of Pinnacle Paper Company was found dead in front of the company’s offices. The case of State of Utopia v. Fran Lewis was argued by 800 school students in teams of 6-9 participants, from 56 high schools across the state in February in the first round of The North Carolina Mock Trial Competition. The winning teams move on to the State Finals in March. 

“We believe that teaching high school students about our justice system and trial-by-jury is crucial to preserving our rights as citizens. Our mission is to create engaged citizens through the hands-on learning activity of mock trial, so students can gain civic understanding, self-confidence, analytical reasoning, and communications skills,” said Rebecca Britton, president of North Carolina Mock Trial Program

Campbell Law School Fifth Annual Bike Ride

The Campbell Law School Fifth annual fundraiser bike ride was held in October. The event raised more than $1,000 for the law school’s student-led Pro Bono Projects that include Teen Court, Domestic Violence Advocacy, Expunctions, Immigrant and Refugee Rights, VITA, Wills/Advance Directives, Innocence Project and Education Law.

Youth Day at the Courthouse

September 9, 2023

The Capital City Lawyer’s Association Youth Law Day was held Saturday, September 9, at the Wake County Courthouse.  Since its inception in 2014, over 1,000 minority students between the ages of 12-18 have been provided the opportunity to learn about the justice system and be exposed to the different roles of those who work within that system. Participants were able to interact with and question attorneys, judges, and law enforcement officers and take a tour of the jail.

The Face of Change

September 1, 2023

The NC Association of Women Attorneys held its annual banquet and silent auction in September at The Big Chill in Charlotte. Seventy people attended. The theme was “Embracing Adversity in the Face of Change.” The keynote speaker was Judge Tayeba Parsa of Afghanistan.

Drag Party Raises Over $60K for Scholarship

Pauli Murray LGBTQ+ Bar Association hosted a drag party in June at Motorco Music Hall in Durham. The event was sold out with over 270 attendees and raised over $60,000 to benefit the Pauli Murray LGBTQ+ Bar Association Lavender Law Scholarship which sends law students to The LGBTQ+ Bar Conference and Career Fair.

NCBA 4ALL Service Day Helps Over 6,000 Callers

The NC Bar Association and NC Bar Foundation held the 16th Annual 4ALL Statewide Service Day in March. More than 351 attorneys and 99 paralegal and law student volunteers provided free legal information and resources to 6,103 callers statewide. WRAL TV hosted one of the call centers.

Wake County Legal Support Center Opens

February 22, 2023

The new Wake County Legal Support Center opened in January at the Wake County courthouse. Most of its cases will be family law. Visitors are not charged for the legal assistance. It is staffed by employees of the North Carolina Equal Access to Justice Commission and primarily funded by Wake County and the Administrative Office of the Courts in addition to other grants.

New SCONC Associate Justice Sworn into Office

January 4, 2023

Trey Allen was sworn in as the newest associate justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court January 4, 2023, in its courtroom in Raleigh. Justice Allen was elected in November defeating Justice Sam Ervin IV, who was up for re-election.

Recession and Labor Concerns Top Ward and Smith In-House Counsel Seminar

January 4, 2023

Out of the pandemic there have been human resource issues with the great resignation, quiet-quitting and labor shortages. Perhaps a recession in the first quarter or two of 2023, if we’re not already in one, will lead to lay-offs,” said Ward and Smith attorney Ken Gray speaking at the firm’s In-House Counsel Seminar in December at the Umstead Hotel in Cary, NC. 

It was Ward and Smith’s first big confab for corporate counsel since before the pandemic and it played to a packed house.

“It could be shifting of the tides in terms of going from labor shortages to perhaps having surpluses, or at least looking for ways to cut costs,” said Gray. “We think that supply chain issues are still going to be a big deal for companies, and in-house counsel have to manage those vendor contracts to make sure that they are seeing all the issues and getting those addressed to protect their companies.”
