AALM: What was the greatest lesson you learned in law school? How do you apply that to your career today?

Hernandez: Law school teaches you that, at times, there can be more than one right answer and that when presented with an issue, it is imperative to view the issue by examining different angles and approaches that may lead to unearthing strategy that advances the position that one advocates. When analyzing a case, a fluid approach is key when crafting the initial roadmap that defines case strategy, but as the case progresses, the roadmap is modified to address the foreseeable possibilities and to mitigate, to the extent possible, against those unforeseen circumstances.

AALM: What do you find particularly rewarding about your practice?

Hernandez: Family law is rewarding because I assist my clients through a tumultuous period in their lives and through advocacy, I facilitate their transition to the next chapter of their lives. After a matter concludes, the testament of a job well done is the client who returns to thank you for your efforts on his or her behalf. Divorce is a physically and emotionally draining process and for a client to acknowledge that they could not have made it through the process without your assistance speaks volumes in terms of a client’s appreciation of your work and effort on their behalf.

AALM: What traits do you think make an attorney exceptional? What’s the difference between a good attorney and an outstanding one?

Hernandez: The traits of an exceptional attorney include intellect, the capacity to simplify complex issues, the ability to succinctly and persuasively relay their position, and an unwavering commitment to uphold the highest level of ethics.

AALM: What case most defined or rede fined your practice?

Hernandez: Every case defines my practice because each case brings a new dimension or approach that adds to the depth of my experience and that knowledge carries forward and is applied to my next matter.

AALM: What accomplishment are you most proud of achieving?

Hernandez: The accomplishment I am most proud of achieving during my legal career was being listed, at the age of 38, in the Florida Super Lawyers Top 50 Women list.

AALM: What do you most hope to accomplish in the future? Where do you see yourself in five years? In 10?

Hernandez: In five to 10 years from now, I may vie for an open judicial seat.
