Melissa Nafash Named To Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee In Hernia Mesh Litigation

Melissa Nafash, an attorney in the New York office of The Lanier Law Firm, has been named to the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the consolidated lawsuits claiming injury from hernia mesh products made and distributed by C.R. Bard Inc. and its subsidiary Davol Inc.

Patients implanted with the mesh have complained of a host of medical problems including chronic pain, hernia recurrence, rejection, infection, scarring, deformation of mesh, improper wound healing, inflammation, adhesions to internal organs, nerve damage, tissue damage, and sometimes even death.

The principal allegations in the lawsuit claim that the mesh materials are incompatible with the human body, and that Bard Davol failed to adequately test the material and warn surgeons about the associated risks. The products are synthetic meshes constructed from polypropylene monofilaments that are knitted together with a goal of inciting tissue in-growth and providing internal protection during the healing process.

Melissa Nafash has served as a member of trial teams that have achieved notable victories for victims of defective and dangerous products, pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

She earned her law degree from Roger Williams University School of Law in 2008 and her bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Connecticut in 2004. She is admitted to the State Bars of New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, and the United States District Courts for the Southern District of New York, District of New Jersey, District of Massachusetts and District of Rhode Island.

The litigation is In Re: Davol/C.R. Bard Hernia Mesh: Mesh Multi-case Management, Coordination No. 2018-9999, in Rhode Island State Court.
