PARRIS Law Firm Obtains $52 Million Verdict in Catastrophic Semi-Truck Collision Trial

July 1, 2026

LOS ANGELES, CAPARRIS Law Firm attorneys Khail Parris, R. Rex Parris and Curtis Crawford obtained a $52,115,000 jury verdict on behalf of a man who suffered severe injuries as the result of a horrific collision in Santa Clarita, CA.

The phase one verdict was $45,615,000, and phase two for punitive damages was an additional $6.5 million.

According to the complaint, a man was riding his motorcycle on Creekside Road in Santa Clarita in April of 2021 when the defendants drove their semi-truck so dangerously that it caused a massive crash. The big-rig turned left without proper precautions, right in front of the motorcycle.

The plaintiff in the case was so severely injured that their long-term health was put into question. They had various significant injuries and required serious medical treatment.

The insurance company for the defendant then negotiated in bad faith, offering nothing at the beginning of litigation and claiming the driver was an independent contractor, therefore the trucking company was not liable for damages. However, the jury sided with the plaintiff in a case that will impact the trucking company for years to come.

In addition to Mr. Khail Parris, Mr. R. Rex Parris and Mr. Crawford, Marci Hilsinger was the paralegal in this matter and played a crucial role.

The case is Los Angeles Superior Court, Case No. 21STCV20196.

GOLDLAW Secures $2.4 Million Jury Verdict for Client Who Suffered Traumatic Brain Injury After Fort Lauderdale Bar Incident

June 30, 2026

WEST PALM BEACH, FLGOLDLAW Litigation Attorneys Timothy Kenison and Paul McBride secured a $2,406,202.40 jury verdict for client Billy Guinan, who sustained a traumatic brain injury after a bouncer forcibly removed and shoved him outside a Fort Lauderdale bar.

Guinan, then 31, had been on a promotional stop for his employer, Boston Beer Co., in the Himmarshee Village bar district in Downtown Fort Lauderdale when a bouncer at Booze Garden removed him and shoved him past the threshold of the door at approximately 2:30 a.m. on November 6, 2021, causing his head to strike the concrete.

He immediately reported having blurred vision, ringing in his ears, brain fog, and headaches. Guinan required nine staples to the top of his head and was immediately diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome, a subsequent diffuse tensor imaging scan confirmed a traumatic brain injury through an abnormality in the right frontal lobe. Surgery in 2024 resolved his double vision, though his tinnitus worsened. His treating neurologist, Carmen Ramirez, M.D., declared that the traumatic brain injury made Guinan more susceptible to dementia.

The defense argued comparative negligence, citing Guinan’s statements to paramedics and a hospital diagnosis of closed head injury.

The jury found defendants 65% liable and Guinan 35% comparatively negligent, returning a total verdict of $2,406,202.40. GOLDLAW represented Guinan through trial, securing an outcome that reflects the severity of the injuries he sustained and the firm’s commitment to pursuing accountability on behalf of injured clients.

Shumaker School Funding Lawsuit Sparks Statewide Reform Across Florida

June 30, 2026

SARASOTA, FLShumaker attorneys successfully led a groundbreaking legal challenge on behalf of the Sarasota County School Board and taxpayers that has resulted in sweeping statewide legislative reform protecting tens of millions of dollars in voter-approved education funding for Florida’s public schools.

The passage of HB 7031E by the Florida Legislature, which contained a revision to Florida Statute Sect. 192.091 governing how tax collectors take commissions follows litigation spearheaded by Shumaker Partner Daniel DeLeo, Associate Raven Peters, and his legal team, after the Sarasota County Tax Collector unilaterally began withholding commissions from a voter-approved school millage referendum, diverting funds intended for classrooms, teachers, school safety, and educational programs.

What began as a local dispute with the Sarasota County Tax Collector to recover millions of dollars wrongfully taken from Sarasota schools has now produced a statewide solution to a growing statewide problem, impacting 28 other Florida school districts and potentially all 67 Florida school districts.

For more than 23 years, Sarasota County had covered the cost of collecting the voter-approved school millage. That longstanding practice changed when the Sarasota Tax Collector, Mike Moran, adopted a new and self-serving interpretation of Florida law and began withholding millions of dollars of the referendum proceeds as a commission.

In response, the Sarasota County School Board and two taxpayers filed suit seeking to halt what it viewed as an unlawful diversion of public education funds. The litigation achieved several significant outcomes, including the recovery of more than $2 million that had been improperly withheld from Sarasota County Schools and the restoration of those funds for educational purposes; the reversal of the Sarasota County Commission’s decision to stop covering the commission costs associated with the voter-approved school millage; legislative clarification through HB 7031E establishing that commissions on school millages are the responsibility of county commissions rather than school districts; and confirmation that tax collectors may waive such commissions entirely, ensuring voter-approved school funding can be directed fully toward education. The legislation’s impact extends far beyond Sarasota County, as HB 7031E is expected to preserve tens of millions of dollars annually for Florida’s public schools by preventing those funds from being diverted to tax collectors’ budgets.

In Sarasota County alone, the financial impact is estimated at approximately $10 million over the next five years.
