The Durham County Bar Association and the 16th Judicial District Bar held its annual meeting and awards lunch on June 10 at the DoubleTree at RDU.

Criminal Minds

It was standing room only at the criminal defense section meeting during the NCAJ Convention in Wilmington. Famed Raleigh criminal defense attorney Joseph Cheshire was feted by an all-star panel of colleagues Sean Devereux, Brad Bannon, David Rudolf and David Teddy, all of whom he had tried cases with.

Among Cheshire’s most famous cases were the Duke lacrosse rape case and the Greg Taylor wrongful conviction case. Rudolf was the lead attorney in the Michael Peterson “The Staircase” trial.

Juneteenth Celebration at NCCU Law School

A2026 Honoring Juneteenth in Our Courts event was held on June 19th at NCCU Student Center. It was hosted by NCCU’s The Justice Institute, the NC Association of Public Defenders, the George H. White Bar Association, the NCAJ and the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Alpha Zeta Omega Chapter of Durham.

NCBA 4ALL Day

The NCBA held its 19th Annual 4ALL Day on March 6. Locations in Charlotte, Greensboro, Raleigh, Wilmington plus 15 firms, law schools, and organizations across the state that hosted NC Lawyers on Call Pro Bono Parties. A total of 7,005 calls were handled by 245 attorneys, 119 law students, and paralegals (acting as call screeners). Since the first 4All Day was created by Janet Ward Black, 151,011 calls have been handled.

Catharine Biggs Arrowood Receives Trailblazer Award for Women in Law

The North Carolina Bar Association Women in the Profession Committee honored Catharine Biggs Arrowood with its second annual Trailblazer Award for Women in Law at a dinner on May 7 at Whitaker & Atlantic in downtown Raleigh.  Arrowood was recognized for “excellence in her area of practice, unwavering professionalism, and continuous commitment to promoting and protecting other women in the legal profession.”  Arrowood was the first female partner at Parker Poe.

NCBA YLD Legal Feeding Frenzy Conference

This March, the NCBA YLD kicked off the Legal Feeding Frenzy. Law firms, law schools, corporate in-house counsel, and government/public interest organizations competed for the most donations while providing food for Feeding the Carolinas food banks. This year, the competition raised over $160,000 for food banks across the state.

The Food Bank’s Jennifer Gedeon led the YLD members and law students on a tour of the food bank in Raleigh.

Durham Bar Foundation Second Annual Benefit

On April 9, the Durham Bar Foundation hosted its Second Annual Benefit at Mystic Farm & Distillery in Durham. More than 160 people was in attendance, and over  $300,000 were raised for the foundation. Donations were led by Diamond Sponsor Ellis Family Law and Platinum Sponsors Jill E. Burton & Associates and the Law Offices of Jacob Goad. Last year’s inaugural event raised $23,000.

The foundation provides financial support to programs that strengthen our community through access to justice, poverty alleviation, economic empowerment, public health, environmental conservation, and education as well as law school scholarships to Durham residents attending NC law schools.

Black Lawyers Ball Raises Scholarship Funds

The Capital City Lawyers Association held its Annual Christmas & Scholarship Gala, affectionately known as Black Lawyers Ball, in December at the Hilton North Raleigh. A sold-out crowd of over 400 people attended.

The gala raised $12,000 for CCLA’s scholarship fund. CCLA will award two stipends to deserving law students who demonstrate a commitment to practicing in the Triangle area and using their legal training and skills to benefit low-income and/or traditionally underserved communities. This has traditionally been used either to supplement income during the summer when applicants have taken an unpaid position, to assist with costs related to the Bar exam, or to help with the purchase of law school books.

WCBA Bar Awards

The Wake County Bar Association raised $108,000 for Legal Aid of North Carolina at the annual WCBA Bar awards on October 30 at Junction West in Raleigh. The bar awards have raised $1.2 million for LANC over 18 years.

The Friends of Wake County guardian ad litem Gala raised over $60,000 at its annual gala in October at The Maxwell. Almost 200 people attended. The Friends provide education advocacy, backpacks, computers, camp grants, orthodontic care, and Christmas gifts for children in Wake County’s foster care program.

Youth Law Day Offers 360 Degree Vantage Point

September

Roughly 225 high school students from around Wake County received a 360-degree view of the county’s legal and judicial system during the Capital City Lawyers Association’s Youth Law Day in September.

“For 10 years, this program has opened doors, broadened horizons, and shown students that they, too, can become the future leaders of our justice system,” said Wake County District Court Judge Ashleigh Parker, and co-founder of Youth Law Day.

Over the past decade, CCLA Youth Law Days have connected more than 2,000 middle and high school students (ages 12–18) with the justice system through interactive learning and mentorship.

During this year’s Youth Law Day, students met with judges, attorneys and law enforcement officers to learn about the daily functions of the justice system and learn about career opportunities. 

They also saw the other side of the law during a jailhouse tour. “Too many young people make temporary decisions that can have lifelong consequences,” said Wake County Superior Court Judge Vince Rozier and a Youth Law Day co-founder.

“What I’m hoping is that they got out of here today with an understanding that we're just normal people. We’re soccer coaches, we’re volunteers in the community, we’re members of the same churches… that we are just like them, we just do a different job,” said Raleigh Chief of Police Rico Boyce.

"I hope that the students left the event knowing that life is all about how you handle plan B and if they are determined and work hard enough, they will be successful in whatever career they choose,” said attorney and Senate Democratic Leader Sydney Batch.
Judge Rozier mentored a student who was role-playing as a prosecutor in a mock trial. “We wanna make sure that they have a fundamental understanding of what the words ‘due process’ mean,” said Rozier.

Wake County Public Defender’s Office Celebrates 20 Years With Family Reunion

The Wake County Public Defender’s Office celebrated its 20th anniversary with a family reunion for 120 friends, supporters, former and current employees at Burning Coal Theatre in July.

“We wanted to commemorate our 20th anniversary with a classy event to celebrate the great work done by our office over the past 20 years,” said Chief Public Defender Deonte’ Thomas. “We did have an incredible turnout. It was amazing to see all our folks glammed up and looking great. We consider our office to be a true family, with those that have been here the entire time, and those who only spent a little while with us, but they are still special to us.”

NCAJ Goes NASCAR at 2025 Convention

DCBA Hosts Law Day

The Durham County Bar Association hosted the annual Law Day on May 1 in front of the courthouse, which was attended by roughly 100 attorneys. “Stand up. Speak out. Defend the courts. Elevate Your Litigation Practice Seminar

Triangle lawyers took part in an Elevate Your Litigation Practice & Support a Great Cause seminar in May at Whitaker & Atlantic. 18th Annual 4ALL-Lawyers on Call

The North Carolina Bar Foundation held its 18th annual 4ALL-Lawyers on Call on March 7. Roughly 450 attorneys, paralegals, and law students answered 7,063 calls in six locations across the state, including the studios at WRAL-TV. In the 18 years of the 4ALL-Lawyers on Call, 144,006 calls have been answered.
