Alexander DeGance Barnett: A New Chapter

Consistently rated one of Jacksonville’s Best Employment Law Firms by Best U.S. News and Best Lawyers, Alexander DeGance Barnett has reason to celebrate, but this year the firm not only celebrates the anniversary of 15 years in business, the partners and staff will also honor the retirement of one of its founders, Mark Alexander.

The partners have a long history together. Prior to founding the firm, Alexander hired Kelly DeGance and Michelle Barnett as young associates to work in the employment law department of a major firm. In 2010, the three decided to break off and together start something new, something different.

“With the downturn in the economy, we saw an opportunity in the marketplace to fill a need that was unmet,” Barnett says. “The move allowed us to be more competitive, to be nimble, to respond to our clients’ needs a bit quicker.”

“We have more control over our client relationships and our ability to serve individual needs,” DeGance says. “It’s worked out well.  We have enhanced our longstanding client relationships and developed many new relationships, which has been exciting.”

“It was never our goal to become a big firm but rather to be a great firm,” Barnett says. “On our 15th anniversary, we are proud of where we are and are excited about the future of our firm.”

Building a Firm

The firm employs nine attorneys and a staff of 15. The culture is collaborative, stressing hard work, but realizing the importance of team members leading a life outside of work. As lawyers working in the field of human resources and education law, the firm devotes a lot of energy to creating a positive and welcoming environment for its team members.

This includes starting each year with a vision boarding exercise encouraging team members to spend time evaluating their priorities and goals for the year. The firm encourages its employees to plan and embrace their goals from major milestones like getting married or welcoming a child to becoming more active, gardening or traveling.

And, since the firm’s first year, they have made a point to celebrate each anniversary by showing their appreciation for the firm’s clients and team members. While the celebrations have changed over the years, the spirit – gratitude – remains the same. Beyond these annual traditions, the firm hosts family events, monthly catch-up lunches, Thanksgiving feasts and other holiday festivities. It’s all an important part of the firm culture.

Much of the success of the firm is a direct result of the collaborative approach maintained by the three partners. DeGance describes the relationship as something of a business marriage. “We opened our firm together. We bought property together. We built our building together. We’ve renovated it together. We’ve hired people together. Our firm has grown in large part because we’ve maintained a very strong, solid business relationship and through our differences we complement each other.”

Mark Alexander – A Look Back on 40 Years

Mark Alexander with Dave Chauncey

Alexander is credited by members of the firm as being a leader in empowering women in the legal profession, a fact proven by his choice in partners when launching the firm.

“He is ahead of his time,” Barnett says. “In most firms, you see a bunch of people who look alike with shared experiences. Instead, Mark found value in our differences. The strength of our firm is driven by our differences including our backgrounds and life experiences.”

“Recognizing the unique experience each individual team member brings to the firm and cultivating that talent has remained a focus at Alexander DeGance Barnett,” says DeGance.

On the eve of his retirement, praise for Alexander is not limited to members of the firm.

Michael Tanner, the 73rd Florida Bar President and an attorney with Gunster, says, “I have known and worked with Mark for many, many years. He is a consummate professional and a tenacious advocate – and a pleasure to work with. I can’t think of a better role model for young lawyers.”

“I’ve had the privilege of practicing law against Mark for over 30 years,” shared Tad Delegal of Delegal, Poindexter & Underkofler PA. “During that time, he has proven to be a worthy adversary—always professional, principled, and honest in his representation of his clients. Over the years, Mark and I have often disagreed on cases, and occasionally, we’ve found common ground. Regardless of our positions, Mark has consistently conducted himself with integrity and professionalism. I’ve had the opportunity to try a case against him, and I knew going into it that his arguments would be well thought out and presented with skill and clarity. One of Mark’s most admirable accomplishments is the successful firm he has built. He’s mentored younger partners who, under his guidance, have continued to develop a respected and thriving practice.”

Delegal recounted a recent incident in which he’d become upset with a member of the ADB Legal team. “Mark responded—perhaps a bit harshly—but he was right. His response made me step back, reflect, and ultimately apologize for my conduct. That moment reminded me that the practice of law isn’t about always agreeing or becoming friends with opposing counsel—it’s about respect, professionalism, and the relationships we build over time.”

Thomas Bishop of Bishop Page & Mills, PLLC shared about his early opportunity working alongside Alexander at Holland & Knight. “He was a young partner when I started as an associate, and we had the chance to work together on several cases and trials. Mark is meticulous, a brilliant tactician, and a lot of fun to work with. He was very generous with his time and explained to a young lawyer not just what we were doing, but why. He taught me great lessons about preparation, advanced thought, and effectively organizing and developing a plan for a complex civil case. He has also been a great friend. I am very grateful for him as a lawyer and a friend.”

Committed to the Continuous Pursuit of Excellence

The firm’s mission statement says the firm is “Committed to the continuous pursuit of excellence – in service to our clients, in written and oral presentation to the court, and in our value for our clients. Through this excellence, we build longstanding relationships with our clients — most of whom become friends and remain clients for years.” The partners wanted and achieved global expertise without sacrificing their desire to remain in touch with and work with their local roots. The international nature of much of their work is handled with a total dedication to personal service to the people, families and organizations they represent.

The firm’s reputation for skill in the courtroom and over the negotiating table stems from a commitment to providing excellence in work product, which is based on a high level of collaboration among the attorneys and staff. “You’re not hiring a lawyer, you’re hiring a group of lawyers who are going to work together in your best interest. And you know, we often say that each of our clients is a firm client. We pair that client with whoever the lawyer is that will best fit their specific needs,” Barnett says.

DeGance recalls a challenging, out-of-town case in which the firm’s collaborative approach won the day. “Mark ran the show like a quarterback in the biggest game of the year. The whole team was assembled with each member having very specific designated roles, which were executed flawlessly. Everything ran seamlessly and I credit Mark for a lot of that success.”

Alexander’s position as a role model and teacher is noted by Margaret W. Dees, the vice dean of Jacksonville University College of Law, who says, “Mark is a lawyer, certainly, but I think more importantly, he is at his most essential, a teacher. He innately draws upon that core mentor and teacher in everything he does – and that makes him stand out among his peers and why he has touched so many lives to their betterment.”

The firm will continue using the full name as established in 2010.  Alexander’s transition was carefully planned and executed without disruption to the firm or its clients. “We’re constantly evolving to meet our clients’ needs,” Barnett says. “Every day is a new challenge and a new opportunity to do good by our clients. We are excited about the future and have total confidence in our team to continue the tradition of excellence established by the firm 15 years ago.”
