Louis Lehot is a corporate parter at Foley & Lardner in Silicon Valley. “Throughout my career, I have advised companies across the entire innovation ecosystem, from first-time founders raising seed capital to venture-backed growth companies, public companies, investors, boards of directors, and acquirers.”

His path into Big Law began in 1993, when he was a Georgetown undergraduate working as a file clerk at Shearman & Sterling. He remained with the firm as a paralegal, returned as a summer associate twice while attending Boston College Law School, and began practicing there in 2000 just as the dot-com bubble burst.

His career developed at several other Big Law firms, through multiple economic cycles and a pivotal partnership setback during the 2008 financial crisis.

In 2019, he took a risk and founded his own Silicon Valley boutique law firm.

“Launching L2 Counsel was both a professional and personal decision,” Lehot says. “After nearly two decades practicing at large international firms, I wanted to build a law firm designed around the needs of founders, investors, and emerging growth companies.

“It was a leap of faith,” he adds. “I did not have an established platform behind me or an inherited client base. What I did have was a clear vision of the type of lawyer I wanted to be: practical, entrepreneurial, and deeply aligned with the people building companies.”

Starting his own firm gave him first-hand experience as a business owner. “It made me a better advisor to founders, board directors, and investors,” he says.

Lehot’s clients scaled rapidly and began facing increasingly complex challenges involving financing, M&A, governance, tax, litigation risk, and public company readiness. Lehot made the decision to join Foley & Lardner.

“Foley offered the opportunity to combine an entrepreneurial mindset with the resources of a premier national firm,” he says. “The firm’s industry depth, and collaborative culture allowed me to continue serving innovation-driven companies while offering them the benefit of a full-service firm. The transition felt like the natural next chapter in my practice.”

While Lehot continues to work with innovative companies of all kinds including AI, software, cybersecurity, fintech, digital health, semiconductor, robotics, deep tech, life sciences, medical device and clean energy companies, the impact of AI on his practice has been far reaching.

“AI will be one of the most transformative forces of our generation,” Lehot says. “Beyond creating entirely new industries and business models, AI is changing how companies are formed, built, financed, governed, scaled, and regulated. We are already seeing founders achieve more with smaller teams, investors reevaluate traditional metrics, and boards wrestle with novel governance and risk management questions. The winners will be companies that thoughtfully combine technological innovation with sound leadership, governance, and execution.”

Lehot tracks the larger trends of the economy like AI through his newsletter, “The Silicon Valley Weekly Docket.”

“I started writing it because I wanted a disciplined way to track and explain what was happening in the startup, venture capital, and public markets ecosystem. My original goal was simple: to help founders, investors, and fellow professionals better understand the market by connecting individual events to larger trends.”

Over time, however, the newsletter evolved. It became a weekly conversation with a broad audience of entrepreneurs, venture capitalists, board members, executives and lawyers.

“Writing it has made me a better advisor. It forces me to continually analyze market developments, identify patterns, and explain complex issues in a practical way. The process keeps me intellectually curious and closely connected to the innovation economy I serve.”
