COVID has changed everything, which should come as no surprise to anyone. More people are working remotely, and attorneys are one group that have not found this to be a major complication. For attorneys trying to get continuing legal education hours however, there has been a whole different challenge involved.
Prior to COVID, between the seminars I did by myself and those where I shared the stage with other speakers, I had between 300 and 400 hours of continuing education each year. In 2020, thanks to COVID, I presented two one-day 12-hour classes and a couple of two-hour classes with social distancing and only one person per table for a total of 28 hours of continuing education.
Now in 2021 things had begun to ease up. I have been able to attend seminars without fear of someone infecting me. I have also begun to present classes myself. The one saving grace is that the 150-hour program I created for chiropractors is being merged with the 80-hour program from the International Chiropractic Association (ICA). The first of eight 25-hour modules should be online as you’re reading this article.
This new program will offer chiropractors certification in trauma at 100 hours and at 200 hours advanced certification. Testing will be administered by the National Board of Chiropractic Examiners (NBCE). Continuing education credits will be hosted by Life Chiropractic College West. No other program has come close to this level of credentials.
As important as it has been for me to educate my fellow chiropractors, I find it equally important to educate attorneys who do the other side of personal injury cases. Prior to COVID, I was able to present quarterly CLE seminars sponsored by Attorney at Law Magazine. Needless to say, those classes got put on the back burner along with everything else in our lives.
Going online to get the hours you need to renew your license is easy enough to do. Getting content that is totally relevant to your practice can be more of a challenge. Having the opportunity to learn from local experts who can assist on your case has been a rare treat. That is about to change.
We will begin presenting free, 3 CLE classes to attorneys with the support of Attorney at Law Magazine. The first one is scheduled for August 18 and they have been scheduled so that by the time the end of June rolls around again, you will have had the opportunity to complete your required 12 CLEs.
Some of the topics I will be covering in these classes include:
IMEs what I look for when I observe these and how to rebut the report they offer to the defense.
Documentation in terms of what you should expect from a treating doctor and what you need to include in your demand package.
Mechanism of injury so that you get a better understand of what your client has been exposed to.
Ethics in terms of protecting your client’s rights without damaging your relationships with doctors.
In addition, we have some guest speakers including Ty Tallman, NMD presenting on QEEGS for concussions. Mike Winberry, DC will be presenting a basic anatomy class so that you can better understand what the doctors are telling you. He will also present on digital motion X-rays, DMX that are completely changing how we diagnose motor vehicle injuries. Other speakers are eager to share in their area of expertise to help you do a better job with your cases.
