Scott Costantino: Built on Trust

When people walk through the doors of the Costantino Law Firm, P.A., they often arrive carrying far more than medical records or insurance paperwork. They come burdened by uncertainty, frustration and, in many cases, one of the most difficult experiences of their lives. They need legal guidance, certainly, but perhaps even more importantly, they need someone they can trust.

For nearly four decades, attorney Scott Costantino has built his practice around that simple but powerful principle.

“I want to treat our clients the way I would expect to be treated if I were the client,” he says.

That philosophy has shaped every stage of his career—from his earliest days as a young trial lawyer to establishing his own firm, mentoring the next generation of attorneys, and ultimately being elected president of one of the legal profession’s most respected organizations. While courtroom victories have certainly marked his career, Costantino believes the most meaningful measure of success is something far less tangible: earning the confidence of those who place their futures in his hands.

His journey to the practice of law wasn’t the result of a lifelong childhood dream. As an undergraduate pursuing a finance degree, Costantino initially envisioned a career in business. A conversation with a friend introduced him to the possibility of combining business and law through a joint MBA and Juris Doctor program. Although practical considerations ultimately led him to pursue law school alone, the decision proved to be the right fit.

It wasn’t until he began participating in trial clinics that everything came into focus.

“I learned that I was much better at applying knowledge than simply receiving it in an academic setting,” he recalls. “Being on my feet in a courtroom before a judge or jury felt like where I belonged.”

That realization would become the foundation for a career spanning nearly 40 years.

Finding Purpose Through Service

Initially, Costantino imagined himself practicing commercial litigation, a natural extension of his business education. His first position, however, introduced him to civil trial work focused primarily on defending personal injury cases.

As the years passed, he found himself drawn to representing injured individuals instead.

The transition fundamentally changed how he viewed the practice of law. Representing corporations centered on financial considerations. Representing individuals meant helping real people rebuild their lives after devastating injuries.

“I found it much more rewarding because I was impacting someone’s life on a very individual and real basis,” he explains.

His role extended far beyond legal advocacy. Clients were simultaneously navigating medical treatment, financial uncertainty, emotional stress and significant life adjustments. Guiding them through those challenges became just as important as pursuing a successful legal outcome.

That perspective continues to define the Costantino Law Firm today.

A Leap of Faith

After more than two decades practicing with a larger firm, Costantino faced one of the most significant decisions of his professional life.

He respected his partners. He enjoyed the collaborative environment. Yet he found himself increasingly drawn toward creating a practice where he could personally guide every client from beginning to end.

Launching the Costantino Law Firm, P.A., represented both a professional challenge and a leap of faith.

“It was something I had always wanted to do eventually,” he says. “Nothing ventured, nothing gained.”

The decision has allowed him to practice law exactly as he envisioned.

Unlike many larger firms, Costantino intentionally limits his caseload. Clients are not handed off to case managers or shuffled among multiple attorneys. From the initial consultation through trial, they work directly with him.

“I’ll be the one they talk to. I’ll be the one they interact with. And if the case goes to trial, I’ll be the one trying it.”

That continuity fosters something every successful attorney knows cannot be manufactured: trust.

More Than Legal Representation

Lawyers are known for their “gift of gab” which oftentimes comes off more as lengthy diatribes heavy with legalese. Have even a brief conversation with this attorney and it becomes readily apparent he has an even more valuable skill – listening.

Costantino believes clients need far more than legal analysis.

“They need to know their concerns become our concerns,” he emphasizes. “Certainly, they cannot have that confidence if they don’t feel they are truly being heard.”

Many clients arrive overwhelmed by circumstances they have never experienced before. While some of their questions involve legal strategy, many revolve around everyday realities: medical treatment, family responsibilities, employment concerns and uncertainty about the future.

“Sometimes,” he says, “simply listening becomes one of the most valuable services an attorney can provide. Equally important is honesty.”

Costantino is careful never to promise outcomes beyond what the legal system can realistically provide.

He explains that the civil justice system exists to compensate victims financially—it cannot revoke professional licenses, punish wrongdoing outside the civil process or solve every problem surrounding a tragic event.

Setting realistic expectations from the beginning allows clients to better navigate what can often become a lengthy and emotionally taxing process.

“I don’t want to give anybody false hope.”

That straightforward approach has become one of the firm’s defining characteristics.

Every Case Matters

Ask Costantino what prospective clients should know before ever making the first phone call, and his answer has little to do with verdicts or credentials.

“Their case becomes very important to me and to my staff,” he says. “We spend countless hours not only working on cases but thinking about them—developing strategy, anticipating challenges and continually searching for the strongest path forward.”

He also understands how vulnerable clients feel when placing their trust in a professional.

“We want to help our clients navigate the process of rebuilding their lives while we are working to resolve their legal issues.”

That philosophy extends beyond communication.

Even when there are no major developments to report, clients hear from the firm because they deserve to know their attorney remains fully engaged. While litigation often requires patience, Costantino believes clients should never wonder whether their lawyer has forgotten them.

Lessons Learned Along the Way

Nearly four decades of practice inevitably produce defining moments. Some come through remarkable victories.

One case involved a client who received what appeared to be a substantial settlement offer—an amount that would have changed her life financially. Yet Costantino believed it fell well short of what justice required.

Although the final decision always belongs to the client, he encouraged her to trust both the preparation of the case and the legal process itself.

She did.

The eventual result at trial exceeded the original offer many times over. For Costantino, the case reinforced an important lesson: honest advice sometimes requires encouraging patience rather than accepting the quickest resolution.

Other lessons have been far more difficult.

One particularly emotional medical malpractice case involved representing a newborn whose case stretched over many years. After two trials, the jury ultimately ruled against the family.

Professionally, it was heartbreaking. Personally, it left an even deeper impression.

“Although I felt I had done my best and that we had made all the right arguments, at the end of the day, the jury decided against our position. That was very impactful to me because I saw up close and personal what the clients had gone through for a number of years, not only the child, but the parents,” he explains. “I also saw how they were devastated that they didn’t get a favorable result at the end. This case reminded me we’re dealing with humans and human tragedy. Whether they win or lose their case, the tragedy doesn’t go away.”

Rather than allowing disappointment to define the relationship, Costantino remained in contact with the family over the years, watching the young child  grow older while overcoming extraordinary physical challenges.

What remained was admiration for the family’s resilience and gratitude that, despite the outcome, they knew every possible effort had been made on their behalf.

The experience continues to influence how he approaches every new client who walks through his office doors.

Leadership Beyond the Courtroom

Costantino’s commitment to professionalism extends well beyond his own practice.

Throughout his career, experienced attorneys generously shared their knowledge with him. Today, he considers mentoring younger lawyers one of his greatest responsibilities.

“I was very fortunate when I was a young lawyer that more experienced lawyers were willing to help me.”

Now he happily answers those same phone calls from attorneys seeking guidance. Whether discussing trial strategy, navigating difficult legal questions or simply offering perspective earned through experience, he views mentorship as an essential part of strengthening the profession.

That spirit of service also led him to leadership within the International Society of Barristers, an invitation-only organization recognized for its exceptionally rigorous selection process.

For Costantino, simply receiving an invitation represented an extraordinary professional honor. Being elected president by his peers became one of the defining moments of his career.

Embracing Change Without Losing Perspective

As the legal profession continues evolving, Costantino remains committed to lifelong learning. He regularly attends continuing education programs, studies changes in procedural rules and closely follows legislative developments affecting civil litigation.

Artificial intelligence represents one of the newest frontiers.

“While recognizing AI’s tremendous potential,” he says, “I ultimately view it as simply another professional tool. It is not a shortcut. Technology may assist research and organization, but it cannot replace thoughtful legal analysis, sound judgment or ethical responsibility.”

While recognizing AI’s tremendous potential, I ultimately view it as simply another professional tool.

A Life Measured by Relationships

When asked about his proudest accomplishment, Costantino’s answer had nothing to do with million-dollar verdicts or professional recognition. Instead, he speaks about his wife, Monica, their nearly 33-year marriage and raising four children who understood that their father’s long hours reflected his commitment to helping others.

That answer says as much about Scott Costantino as any résumé ever could.

Professional success has certainly followed. So have leadership positions, professional honors and decades of satisfied clients.

Former clients return years later seeking help once again. Parents refer their children. Young attorneys seek his counsel. Colleagues across the country entrust him with leadership.

Those accomplishments cannot be measured solely in verdicts or awards.

They are built on trust.

And after nearly four decades practicing law, Scott Costantino continues to prove that trust remains one of the most valuable things an attorney can ever earn.
