Dr. Noah Kaufman: Witness. Writer. Warrior. Doctor.

Dr. Noah Kaufman is not easy to categorize. A seasoned and respected emergency room physician, a dynamic public speaker, a frequent expert on national news broadcasts, and even a seven-season competitor on “American Ninja Warrior,” Kaufman’s professional path has been anything but typical. But while his resume spans a wide range of skills and disciplines, his work as an expert witness has emerged as one of the most impactful—and personally rewarding—chapters of his multifaceted career.

His career has spanned from California where he was a partner at Tahoe Emergency Physicians for many years to UCHealth in Colorado where Kaufman treated thousands of patients in crisis. He thrives in fast-paced, high-stakes environments and brings the same clear-headed decisiveness to the courtroom. His journey into expert witness work, however, was less about a career pivot and more about an organic evolution that merged his lifelong passions for both medicine and law.

“I’ve always been fascinated by both,” Kaufman says. “My first interest in medicine started with a Fisher Price doctor’s kit when I was a little boy. I was captivated early on. But I also loved legal dramas like ‘L.A. Law’ and later ‘Suits,’ even if they were a bit over-the-top. With two strong women in my life who are attorneys—my mother and my life partner—I was always exposed to the law in a meaningful way. At one point, I even considered going to law school myself.”

It was this dual curiosity that eventually led Kaufman to found Kaufman Medical Group, a consulting firm that began as an educational platform for new physicians but quickly blossomed into a sought-after resource for attorneys in need of medical expert analysis.

“Upon completing my residency, I noticed how differently residents approached the transition to becoming an attending physician. There wasn’t a lot of guidance out there,” he explains. “I started engaging with people online, offering advice and speaking about it. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, I started receiving inquiries from attorneys asking if I’d be willing to consult or serve as an expert witness.”

It didn’t take long for Kaufman to realize how well-suited he was for the work. “I love writing, and I enjoy public speaking—both of which are essential in this type of work,” he says. “I was amazed at how quickly Kaufman Medical Group took off.”

The Role of an Expert Witness

What began as a few informal consultations has since grown into a structured, thriving business. Kaufman Medical Group now offers attorneys a complimentary 20-minute case consultation, followed by a detailed strategy session or written proposal outlining the case analysis and retainer information. Kaufman’s services are in high demand, by both plaintiff and defense attorneys, because of his reputation for rigor, clarity and impartiality. “I love giving second opinions to attorneys who may already have an expert and want to cover their bases” he says.

“You have a duty to the court to be completely objective,” Kaufman emphasizes. “That’s why I’ll turn down cases if I don’t believe in the merits on either side. Some expert witnesses seem to make it their job to find or even manufacture an argument regardless of the strength of the case. I think that’s unethical.”

In his view, expert witness work should serve both the legal system and the attorneys navigating it. “A big part of our work at Kaufman Medical Group is helping lawyers become educated on medical standards so they can avoid gray areas or poorly supported arguments that only serve to drag a case out unnecessarily,” he says. “It saves everyone time, effort, and often, disappointment.” Frequently, Dr. Kaufman will spend time—off the clock—to help educate a family or client of an attorney if he cannot support their claim.

Kaufman’s first foray into expert witness work is a story he remembers vividly. “I don’t recall who made the very first call, but I do remember being asked to evaluate injuries in a domestic abuse case,” he says. “They wanted to know if what I saw in the ER matched the reported altercation. At the time, I didn’t even know which side had retained me. It just struck me that despite not being forensically trained, I had the clinical knowledge to answer that question. I really enjoyed the process, and I was hooked.”

That moment affirmed the value of his medical expertise in a legal setting and set the tone for how he’s approached every case since with objectivity, attention to detail, and a deep respect for the judicial process.

What Makes an Effective Expert?

Kaufman is quick to note that expertise in medicine alone doesn’t guarantee success in the courtroom. “Obviously, experience and skills as a physician are essential. But beyond that, you need likability, relatability, strong communication skills, and the ability to write and speak clearly. You’re essentially laying out an argument about prospective reasonable care” he explains.

Those qualities have earned Kaufman a reputation not just as a credible expert, but as a partner in legal strategy. “I’d say that 90% of experts form their opinion and don’t think much beyond that. What distinguishes my work, and Kaufman Medical Group more broadly, is that I help attorneys think through definitions, lines of reasoning, questions to ask. I’m extremely responsive; people can text me anytime. As an ER doctor, I’m used to juggling a lot at once, and I like to keep my to-do list clean.”

Kaufman’s dedication to his clients’ needs is matched by his commitment to staying grounded in ethics and professional integrity. He believes that clear boundaries and honest assessments are just as valuable to attorneys as favorable testimony.

“Frequently, attorneys are happy when I tell them I can’t support their case,” he says. “It saves them time and keeps them from chasing something that’s not viable. In the long run, that’s more helpful than trying to force an opinion just to fit the narrative.”

A Natural Leader and Educator

Outside of his consulting work, Kaufman has served on the peer review committee at UCHealth, a role he describes as a natural extension of his mission to educate and empower others—whether they’re fellow physicians or legal professionals.

“Being on the committee allowed me to help maintain high standards in clinical care, which ties directly into what I do as an expert,” he says. “It’s all connected.”

His educational approach to expert witness work is intentional. “We don’t just write reports and testify. We help lawyers, judges and jurors think more like clinicians,” he says. “It’s about making sure they understand the medical terminology, the standards of care, and how those things translate into legal strategy.”

A Life Lived Fully—In and Out of the Spotlight

For all his accomplishments in medicine and law, Kaufman has also achieved a surprising level of fame in a completely different arena: “American Ninja Warrior.” He’s competed in seven seasons of the hit NBC series, impressing viewers not just with his athleticism, but with his poise and professionalism. In his debut appearance on Season 5, he famously reduced a fellow contestant’s dislocated shoulder on television before sailing through the obstacle course with ease.

That moment, equal parts drama and sportsmanship, encapsulated the spirit of Noah Kaufman—calm under pressure, equipped for the unexpected, and always ready to help.

“It’s been a wild ride,” he says with a laugh. “I think that drive to take on challenges, whether it’s in the ER, in court or on a Ninja Warrior course, comes from the same place. I love solving problems. I love helping people. And I love pushing myself to do more.”

When he’s not in the ER, teaching, lecturing or appearing as an expert witness, Kaufman enjoys nothing more than spending time with family and his life-long passion, rock climbing. The family enjoys any time they escape the hubbub of the city and seek solace and recreation at their cabin in Kentucky.

As evidenced by his performance on “American Ninja Warrior,” the 50-year-old maintains a healthy lifestyle eating well and working out.

His more sedentary interests include writing, thinking, reading, and speaking with attorneys. He’s also in the midst of completing his first book entitled, “The Ethical Expert Witness.”

“I’m in a very fortunate position because as much as I love medicine and enjoy my work as an expert witness, at this point in my life I don’t have to do either. I’m in a financial position where I could just retire, but I feel I’m at the height of my career, and I try to maintain a pretty good balance.”

The Future of Kaufman Medical Group

As Kaufman Medical Group continues to grow, its founder remains committed to maintaining the personal touch that’s made the firm successful. “This isn’t a churn-and-burn type of operation,” he says. “We’re selective about the cases we take on. We want to be truly helpful—to provide clarity, strategy and support. And we want to do it in a way that respects everyone’s time and integrity.”

That ethos of clarity, compassion and courage guides everything Kaufman does, whether he’s testifying in court, mentoring new doctors, or racing across a television obstacle course.

In a world where depth often gives way to speed and flash, Dr. Noah Kaufman stands out as a man who combines both. His career is proof that expertise and ethics are not mutually exclusive, and that even in the most high-pressure environments, it’s possible to lead with integrity, intelligence and a deep commitment to helping others.
